In other news, Brian Q. Newcomb of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Hagar arranged a reunion with his first recording band, the influential but not vastly successful, MONTROSE at his sold-out show Saturday night (August 23) at UMB Bank Pavilion. "Following the 90-minute set with his band THE WABORITAS, Hagar returned with the original players, guitarist Ronnie Montrose, bassist Bill Church, and drummer Denny Carmassi, to play six songs from their self-titled debut. 'Rock the Nation', 'Bad Motor Scooter', and 'Rock Candy' were crunchy hard rock songs with dynamic hooks, exhibiting Montrose's serious guitar hero chops and Hagar's still youthful screamer of a voice.
" 'Space Station #5' was, well, spacey, while 'Make It Last', suggested that even at a very young age, Hagar was writing songs that suggested he was in it for the long haul. 'Good Rockin' Tonight' capped things off with a glorious finish.
"But the MONTROSE reunion and guest spot with Michael Anthony were just icing on the cake. Everyone knows it's all about Sammy. Hagar and St. Louis have a special love affair, which is celebrated with these yearly mutual admiration events, proved by a rare sold-out show in a major venue.
"Fans were treated to pretty much the same show as previous years. Seventy-five or so rabid fans stood on stage on risers behind the band for the entire event, scantily clad waitresses served Hagar his signature tequila drinks, and the singer and his fine band served up the hits." Read more.
